Help us improve the Art That Excites program
Oceanside Mural Initiative is now Art that Excites
In response to voter feedback and community interests in MainStreet Oceanside's mural program, MainStreet's Design Committee reassessed the overall vision of the Oceanside Mural Initiative, leading to the Art That Excites rebranding. The rebranding aligns with Oceanside values, describes the overall focus of the initiative and provides a shared vision representative of the community. The objective of the program remains to install 10 curated public art murals to transform Downtown Oceanside into a public art destination, to provide art education and community outreach, and to help define Oceanside as a community whose identity is built upon and driven by the arts.

"The Beauty of the Sea Will Always Be With Me"
The first Oceanside Mural Initiative mural was completed in 2017 by Skye Walker. The mural was selected by the Oceanside community with over 1,500 votes. The public art mural continues to be celebrated by visitors and locals alike. MainStreet Oceanside matched dollar for dollar to make this project a reality.

"Yin Yang Dragons" and tribute to the Eastside "Posole" Neighborhood
Gloria Muriel, a San Diego-based artist, was the winner of our community vote to create the second mural. This has lead to a collaborative mentoring opportunity curated by Dinah Poellnitz in which Muriel is working with local young artist Isabel Figueroa on the installation of an additional mural that illustrates the rich history of the Eastside "Posole" Neighborhood adjacent to Downtown Oceanside. Each section of Figueroa's mural tells a story, and the intersection of the two murals will represent the past and future of Oceanside. Both murals are scheduled to be completed by January 2020.

Ocean Glass Mosaic Mural
Glass mosaic muralist Don Myers is partnering with the MainStreet Oceanside Design Committee to install a glass mosaic mural. Depicting a community of local sea life as it resides below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, the 12-by-13-foot mural is scheduled to be complete by the end of the first quarter of 2020. We are giving the Oceanside community an opportunity to be a part of the mural by sponsoring a marine animal or plant on a first-come, first-served basis. Alternatively, community members can donate directly to Art That Excites or participate in upcoming mural-creation workshops to assemble the mural, which will complete the first phase of the Art that Excites program.
