APRIL 4 WORKSHOP CANCELED
Community Mosaic Building Workshops
April 4 CANCELED
June 6 TBD
10 a.m.-3 p.m., Don Myers Stained Glass
IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE THE SPREAD OF COVID-19 IN OUR COMMUNITY, THE APRIL 4 WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELED. Help us create Downtown Oceanside’s next public art mural as a community. Join us for a series of free mosaic-building workshops led by stained glass and mosaic artist Don Myers. Sponsored by Oceanside Glass & Tile and open to all, the workshops to assemble the third public art mural of the Art That Excites program will be held on Saturdays, Feb. 29, April 4 and June 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., next to Don Myers Stained Glass at 1025 S. Coast Highway. Drop in anytime to participate. A number of local businesses, including The Cup, DoughSide Donuts, Santosha Nutrition, The Social Garden and Sonora Refillery, will also be sponsoring and popping up at the upcoming workshops.
Through the workshops, Myers and our community will together assemble a 12-by-16-foot glass mosaic mural representing a community of local sea life as it resides below the surface of the Pacific Ocean just off our beaches. Sponsorships are available for each of the mural’s 77 sea animals and plants, offering an additional opportunity for community members to participate in the creation of the installed mural. Starting at $100, sponsorships vary based on sea life size and type, from starfish and sea grass up to the mural's only giant Pacific octopus at $7,500. Sponsors will be recognized next to the mosaic mural on a granite plaque, which can feature the name of the donor or the donor’s family, an honoree, a group or a business. Sponsorships can be made at the Community Mosaic Building Workshops or the MainStreet office, 701 Mission Ave., where the sponsorship application is also available. Tax-deductible donations in any amount for Art That Excites can also be made to Main Street Foundation Inc.

Ocean Glass Mosaic Mural
Glass mosaic muralist Don Myers is partnering with the MainStreet Oceanside Design Committee to install a glass mosaic mural. Depicting a community of local sea life below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, the 12-by-16-foot mural will be created with glass provided by Oceanside Glass & Tile by the end of the first quarter of 2020. Community members and businesses can be part of the mural by sponsoring a marine animal or plant, participating in upcoming mural-creation workshops to assemble the glass or donating directly to Art That Excites. The mural will complete the first phase of the Art that Excites program.

"Yin Yang Dragons" and tribute to the Eastside "Posole" Neighborhood
Gloria Muriel, a San Diego-based artist, was the winner of our community vote to create the second mural. This has lead to a collaborative mentoring opportunity curated by Dinah Poellnitz in which Muriel is working with local young artist Isabel Figueroa on the installation of an additional mural that illustrates the rich history of the Eastside "Posole" Neighborhood adjacent to Downtown Oceanside. Each section of Figueroa's mural tells a story, and the intersection of the two murals will represent the past and future of Oceanside.

"The Beauty of the Sea Will Always Be With Me"
The first Oceanside Mural Initiative mural was completed in 2017 by Skye Walker. The mural was selected by the Oceanside community with over 1,500 votes. The public art mural continues to be celebrated by visitors and locals alike. MainStreet Oceanside matched dollar for dollar to make this project a reality.
About Art that Excites
Art That Excites, previously the Oceanside Mural Initiative, seeks to install 10 curated public art murals in Downtown Oceanside. Art that Excites is a community-driven program that will integrate key partners in the Downtown Oceanside area. Through this program, Oceanside will become a destination for public art, create a model by which Oceanside and other communities can fulfill community-driven arts initiatives, act as a medium for education and community outreach, and help to define Oceanside as a community whose identity is built upon and driven by the arts.
