Managing stress, finding relief

Recognize stress symptoms, make time to manage chronic stress

Everybody gets stressed sometimes. A little bit of stress won’t hurt, and in some cases may even be beneficial, but chronic stress can lead to health problems down the line. Excessive stress can contribute to a host of maladies — high blood pressure, depression, overeating, insomnia, heartburn, ulcers, aches and pains and many, many more. Everybody deals with stress, but some people manage it better than others.

In this episode of San Diego Health, host Susan Taylor and guest Dr. Stacie Ly, an internal medicine physician at Scripps Coastal Medical Center Carlsbad, discuss stress triggers, the physical and emotional toll chronic stress takes, and when to seek medical help. Dr. Ly also outlines some stress management strategies that work if you make the time, including exercises like yoga and tai chi, meditation, deep breathing, even talking to a friend.
